Welcome to our Acupuncture FAQ page! Here you’ll find answers to frequent questions about acupuncture, how it works, what to expect, and how it can help you on your health journey.

1. What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique where thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body. These points regulate the flow of energy (Qi) and blood, helping balance physical, emotional, and mental health. Acupuncture boosts the body’s natural healing processes, improves immune function, enhances circulation, and reduces stress. It’s recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for over 40 conditions.

2. What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?
Acupuncture can address a wide range of health issues, including:
- Chronic Pain: Back pain, arthritis, migraines.
- Stress & Anxiety: Helps reduce stress and enhance mood.
- Sleep Disorders: Aids in managing insomnia and improving sleep quality.
- Digestive Problems: Treats issues like IBS, nausea, and more.
- Women’s Health: Relieves menstrual cramps, balances hormones, and supports fertility.
- Respiratory Issues: Manages allergies, asthma, and sinus problems.

3. How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture works by restoring balance in the body’s nervous system through the insertion of needles into specific points. These points help regulate Qi, which in turn helps the body heal itself more effectively. By addressing imbalances caused by stress, diet, lack of sleep, or trauma, acupuncture improves overall health and well-being.

4. What Should I Expect During My First Visit?
Your first acupuncture visit will include:
- Consultation: We’ll discuss your health history, current concerns, and treatment goals.
- Assessment: I’ll evaluate your condition by checking your pulses, examining your tongue, and palpating your abdomen.
- Treatment: After answering your questions, we will begin the acupuncture session.
- Duration: The first visit lasts about 90 minutes.
- Cost: The first session is $250.

5. How Often Should I Schedule Appointments?
Acupuncture treatments build on each other. We generally recommend two sessions per week for the first two weeks, then transition to weekly treatments. If your symptoms worsen between appointments, you may need an extra session to keep progress on track. As you improve, we’ll space out the treatments.

6. How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions depends on your specific condition and response to treatment. Typically, after two weeks of treatment, we evaluate your progress. Most patients notice improvements within 12 sessions. We’ll continue adjusting treatment frequency as needed to maintain steady progress.

7. What Should I Wear to My Appointment?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing so I can easily access your arms and legs for treatment. If loose clothing isn’t a possibility, we provide sheets and blankets to ensure your comfort during the session.

8. What Happens During Follow-Up Visits?
Return visits typically last between 45-60 minutes and cost $120. These sessions include a progress check, discussion, pulse evaluation, and treatment.
9. Are There Any Side Effects?
Acupuncture, like any treatment, can have both positive and negative side effects. Here’s a balanced view of what to expect:
Positive Side Effects of Acupuncture:
- Improved Sleep: Many patients experience better quality sleep and more restful nights.
- Increased Energy: Acupuncture often leaves you feeling more energized and alert throughout the day.
- Reduced Stress: Treatments can lead to a calm, relaxed state, helping lower anxiety and stress levels.
- Enhanced Mood: Acupuncture can balance emotional states, reduce irritability, and improve overall mood.
- Better Digestion: It helps regulate digestive function, easing issues like bloating, indigestion, and constipation.
- Boosted Immune Function: Regular treatments may strengthen your immune system, making you less prone to illness.
- Improved Circulation: Acupuncture promotes healthy blood flow, aiding in quicker recovery and overall vitality.
- Relief in Other Areas: Sometimes, patients notice relief in unrelated areas of pain or discomfort.
Potential Negative Side Effects of Acupuncture:
- Mild Soreness: Some slight soreness may occur around the needle points, especially after the first session.
- Minor Bruising: Small bruises may occasionally appear but typically heal quickly.
- Temporary Fatigue: You may feel a bit tired as your body adjusts to the treatment.
- Lightheadedness: Rarely, some people feel briefly lightheaded after a session, especially if it’s their first time.
- Emotional Response: Acupuncture can release emotions, which might make you feel more reflective or tearful for a brief time.
These side effects are generally mild and temporary, and the positive benefits of acupuncture often outweigh the negatives for most patients.

10. Is Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?
Insurance coverage for acupuncture varies. Before your appointment, check with your insurance provider to ask:
- If acupuncture is covered
- What conditions are eligible
- Your deductible and session limits
- Whether a referral or prior authorization is needed
